The finals of the Zenith Bank Delta Principals Cup earlier scheduled for Saturday, March 3, has been brought forward to Friday, March 2.
Head of the management of the event, Tony Pemu of Hideaplus Ltd, revealed that the adjustment of the programme by one day is to enable the Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa attend.
The governor who is the foremost supporter and promoter of the event is said to have a crucial engagement on the earlier date and was said to have been saddened that his programme will not enable him attend the finals. The organisers thus considered his plea for a possible adjustment to enable him attend.
It will be recalled that Gov Okowa who is greatly excited at the revival of the Principals Cup sat through the long hours of the finals of the first (2017) edition held at the Ozoro Polytechnic Stadium. Impressed by the success of the event and the performance of the students, he was moved to award scholarships to individual award winners for the duration of their secondary school programmes. The beneficiaries of the gesture worth N200,000 per person per year include King Ekelene who won the Golden Glove, Fegor Ugbome who emerged the highest goal scorer, both of Master Care International School who won the trophy, and Itaoghene Emmanuel from Idjerhe Grammar School who won the Most Valuable Player award.
The finals of the second edition now re-fixed for March 2 at same Ozoro Polytechnic Stadium promises even greater excitement and Okowa, a keen promoter of school and grassroots sports, is upbeat about its prospects as a platform to provide opportunities for the youth to express their talents and foster friendship among the emerging generation of leaders in the state.
He has also suggested that a platform should be created alongside the Principals Cup to include primary schools and female players in his vision for all round development of Delta State students and pupils.
Interestingly, the final day programme will feature “Lets Play”, a Supersport event for the promotion of sports among school children in inner communities. The event anchored by ex-Super Eagles forward, Victor Ikpeba, is designed to draw kids from the rural and inner city communities to enjoy sporting fun and mentoring, with Supersport’s broadcast crew on hard to do the coverage.
The revival of the Principals Cup has been hailed as a significant initiative of the Okowa administration and the Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chiebu Ebie, for the benefit of present and coming generations of school children and the youth of Delta State.
