Kano Pillars skillful midfielder Matthew Ifeanyi believes the former champions can still regain their title in the ongoing Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) season but has urged his team mates to up their performance and work harder to bring back the glory days again.

The Pyramid City side have amassed four points from possible nine since the kickoff of the second stanza and recently crashed out of the Federation Cup in the round of 32 after 1-2 loss to Prime FC of Osogbo. Their poor run of form has drawn criticism from several sections of the Sai Masu Gida faithfuls, some of whom are now calling for the sack of Coach Mohammed Baba Ganaru.

Pillars are currently 4th on the league table boasting 33 points from 21 games, five points adrift of table toppers Wikki Tourists and closest contenders Rivers United.

Ifeanyi told nPFL.ng that he believes that the former champions will make amends with the make or break tie involving league leaders Wikki Tourists and Kano Pillars this weekend at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi. Even with four hours drive from Kano to Bauchi which is about 385 kilometers, the match is classified as the “Northern Classico” owing to the rivalry between the pair. Last season the Bauchi outfit scooped four points leaving Pillars with a point from the two legs. Wikki drew 1-1 at the Sani Abacha Stadium and won 2-0 in the reverse fixture. This season Pillars is having the edge with a 2-1 win on match day 3 in Kano.

Ifeanyi foresees a gritty battle on the field of play but is confident that his team has the arsenal to snatch all three points at the expense of the hosts. “We know it is a daunting task considering their form at the moment but I can assure you that surprises are imminent in football and Pillars are ready for any opponent. I am not good at boasting but I give you my words, we are heading to Bauchi for something good for our fans”.

Wikki Tourists are a free scoring side at home and unbeaten in four matches since Match Day 19. They have beaten Ikorodu United home and away, clinching six points and added to the home win of El-kanemi Warriors on Match Day 21 and another impressive draw in Owerri to Heartland sums up their four match day adventure. The Tourists have a good home record with convincing wins. Heartland and Akwa United are the only two teams that picked points in Bauchi this season
