Balogun, Troost-Ekong celebrate Super Eagles defence partnership

After frustrating all efforts by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon for a consolation goal in their 4-0 fall to the Super Eagles in last Friday’s Africa Group B Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier, the duo of Nigeria’s centre backs, Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong, took to social media to celebrate their partnership in the Super Eagles defence, describing it in superlative terms.

Describing the victory over Cameroon as a befitting birthday gift for Troost-Ekong whose birthday anniversary fell on the day of the match, Leon Balogun said his defence partnership with Troost-Ekong is “special.”

“Our connection has been special since day 1! May u continue to fly high on & off the pitch. 3 for u today.
Happy birthday Oga Ekong”, Leon wrote on his Twitter handle in a tribute to Troost-Ekong.
In further tweets he also described the Super Eagles as “gang business” and his pairing with Troost-Ekong as like “Berlin Wall. “
In his celebration of the Super Eagles victory, Troost-Ekong who said he was proud to be part of the Super Eagles also alluded to his partnership with Balogun, making a joke of their foreign parental connection.
“#OyinboWall 4-0 win against Cameroon. Couldn’t be more proud to be part of this team. Best birthday present! Thanks to all the fans”, he wrote on his Twitter handle.
Both players have been splendid in keeping the Super Eagles defence with Troost-Ekong providing aerial superiority while Balogun took no nonsense in his clearances to frustrate attacks.
Born of Nigerian father and German mother in West Berlin, Balogun who plays for Mainz 05 in the German Bundesliga debuted for the Super Eagles in a friendly against Mexico in 2014, while Troost-Ekong of Nigerian father and mother from the Netherlands and playing currently for Bursaspor SK in the Turkish league first featured for the Super Eagles in 2015 in an AFCON qualifier against Chad.
